Top 10 Nintendo Switch Games for GBA & DS Fans

by Isaac Feb 11,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online boasts a strong GBA library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've chosen ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – presented without ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my view, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison piece, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of platform, even appealing to those who typically avoid the genre.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Game Boy Advance saw the rise of a worthy successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series, although the initial entry might feel slightly rough around the edges compared to its polished sequels. Begin here and progress through the series at your leisure.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. Mega Man Battle Network is an RPG with a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on the right day. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the addictive gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets further enhance its appeal. A top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae achieved cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, broadened its audience significantly, establishing Shantae as a major franchise. Its origins are somewhat hazy, stemming from an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon and may warrant inclusion on a future list.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with comedic flair and engaging storylines. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit. A strong contender for the best in the series.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating and highly recommended title that deserves wider recognition.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games, each worthy of play. Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. All three games offer unique strengths.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch port is a commendable effort. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and a rewarding experience despite its complexities.
