Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's heatwave has finally subsided, leaving behind memories of sunshine and gaming adventures. I'm feeling refreshed and ready for autumn, and I appreciate sharing those summer moments with you all. Let's dive into today's exciting lineup of reviews, new releases, and sales!

The Nintendo Switch continues to deliver second chances at classic titles, and the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is a prime example. This collection finally brings Miles Edgeworth's two post-Trials & Tribulations adventures to English-speaking audiences. The sequel masterfully builds upon the original's storyline, enhancing the overall experience. Playing as Edgeworth offers a unique perspective from the prosecution's side, while maintaining the core gameplay mechanics of investigation, witness examination, and puzzle-solving. While the pacing can feel less structured than other Ace Attorney games, fans of the series will find this sub-series compelling. If the first game feels a bit slow, persevere – the second game significantly improves on the formula.

Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode for a more relaxed experience, and the option to switch between original and updated visuals/soundtracks. The inclusion of a dialogue history is a welcome addition, enhancing replayability. The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a fantastic package, making every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) available on Switch. If you're a fan, this is a must-have.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome addition to the gaming world. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel retains the challenging physics-based platforming of the original, perhaps even exceeding it in difficulty. However, a new easier mode caters to a broader audience. The core gameplay remains intact, utilizing protagonist Yumetaro's star for attacks, traversal, and puzzle-solving. Collectibles add a layer of customization and reward players for tackling difficult challenges.

The game's length is comparable to the original, but the difficulty remains significant. Frequent deaths are expected, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain engagement, even during challenging moments. Gimmick! 2 successfully captures the essence of its predecessor while adding its own unique elements. Fans of the original and challenging platformers alike should check it out. However, casual players should be warned – this game is not for the faint of heart.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. While the Switch's hardware may struggle at times, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and creepy visuals still deliver a satisfying experience. The weapon system adds a strategic layer, requiring players to manage energy levels and utilize melee attacks to recharge their primary weapon. The dash maneuver offers both offensive and defensive capabilities.

While not identical to its predecessor, Valfaris: Mecha Therion maintains the original's distinct atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. While performance may be slightly better on other platforms, the Switch version remains enjoyable.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Licensed games often cater to existing fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. The game excels in its fan service, providing engaging writing and meta-systems that reward dedicated players. However, the limited number of repetitive mini-games may not appeal to those unfamiliar with the Umamusume franchise. The overall experience feels unbalanced, prioritizing fan service over broader appeal.

Even for fans, the game's limited depth may lead to rapid burnout. While the visuals, sound, and unlockables are well-executed, the overall gameplay lacks the staying power needed for a successful party game.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

This collection shines a light on Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit titles, offering three fully localized games in one package. The collection includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. Each game features save states, rewind functionality, display options, and an art gallery. The full localization is a significant achievement, making these games accessible to a wider audience for the first time.

The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island provides a solid adventure experience. The Wing of Madoola is the most ambitious but also the most uneven. While not groundbreaking, these titles offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's history and are a worthwhile addition for retro gaming enthusiasts.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
