Studio Run By Diablo and Diablo 2 Devs Is Making A 'Low Budget' ARPG

by Claire Dec 25,2024

Former Diablo developers are creating a groundbreaking new ARPG. Moon Beast Productions, a studio founded by industry veterans, has secured funding to develop this innovative action RPG. The challenge will be competing with established giants like Diablo and Path of Exile 2.

The original Diablo, released in 1997, was a massive success, selling over 2.5 million copies and profoundly impacting the ARPG genre. Its sequel, Diablo 2 (2000), achieved even greater success, selling over 15 million units and solidifying its place as a genre-defining title.

Now, industry veterans Phil Shenk, Peter Hu, and Erich Schaefer have formed Moon Beast Productions. They've secured $4.5 million in funding to develop a new ARPG aiming to redefine the genre's traditional design. The team, including members who worked on Diablo 1 and 2, plans to achieve this through innovative design rather than sheer scale. Erich Schaefer, the studio's chief creative director, stated that they've envisioned a more open, dynamic ARPG for over two decades, aiming to recapture the essence of the early Diablo games. Details remain scarce, but the team's experience suggests a high potential for success.

Breaking into the competitive ARPG market will be a significant hurdle. Diablo 4's recent Vessel of Hatred expansion saw considerable success, highlighting the existing fanbase's loyalty.

Competing directly with Diablo, and other strong contenders like Path of Exile 2, presents a formidable challenge. Path of Exile 2's recent launch on Steam was a triumph, reaching a peak player count exceeding 538,000 and securing a top-15 spot in Steam's all-time peak player count. Its critical reception has also been overwhelmingly positive (87 on OpenCritic). Moon Beast Productions' new ARPG will need to achieve similar success to make its mark and advance the genre.
