Street Fighter Film's Director Unveiled

by Madison Feb 23,2025

Legendary Entertainment's new Street Fighter movie has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this latest big-screen adaptation of the iconic fighting game franchise.

Capcom's significant involvement is confirmed, and the film is already slated for release on March 20, 2026.

PlayThis isn't the first time Street Fighter has graced the silver screen. The 1994 adaptation, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia, remains a cult classic, despite mixed critical reception at its release.

While casting details remain under wraps, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life.

Initially, Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) were attached to direct, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's appointment suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist, comedic tone, aligning with the often-over-the-top nature of the game itself. This shift is a welcome prospect for many fans who appreciate Street Fighter's cartoonish elements.

In the meantime, players can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the new fighter, Mai Shiranui. Read our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review for a detailed analysis.
