SaveMultiVersus Trends as Gameplay Updates Lauded Amid Server Outage

by Audrey Feb 19,2025

MultiVersus's impending closure in May, after Season 5, hasn't dampened the enthusiasm of its players. A recent update dramatically increased combat speed, a change long-requested by the community, resulting in a significantly improved gameplay experience and a burgeoning #SaveMultiVersus social media campaign.

The game's final season, launched February 4th, introduced Aquaman and Lola Bunny as its last playable characters. However, the update's focus was on sweeping combat changes, creating a faster, more fluid fighting style. This fundamental shift, detailed in a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video, is a stark contrast to the slower, "floaty" gameplay criticized during the 2022 beta and even the game's relaunch last May.

Patch notes attribute the speed increase to a reduction in hitpause across most attacks. Many characters, including Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, and Black Adam, now boast enhanced speed, particularly with fast fall capabilities on certain aerial attacks. Character balance adjustments, such as Garnet's altered ringout potential, further refine the gameplay.

The transformation is so significant that MultiVersus feels like a completely different game. Yet, this revitalized experience is short-lived, as the game's servers will shut down on May 30th, ending seasonal content and online play. Only offline modes will remain.

This bittersweet situation has left fans both celebrating the improved gameplay and mourning the game's imminent demise. Comments online highlight the irony: the game finally achieves its potential just as it's being discontinued. One Reddit user aptly described it as "the most interesting bad game in existence," referencing its troubled launch, relaunch, and final, impressive update.

Professional player Mew2King questioned the timing of the speed increase, highlighting the potential MultiVersus possessed had these changes been implemented earlier. Another Reddit user lamented the missed opportunity, drawing parallels to the longevity of Apex Legends, despite its controversial monetization, due to its strong initial gameplay foundation.

Despite the outpouring of support and pleas to reconsider, Player First and Warner Bros. remain committed to the shutdown. Real-money transactions were disabled on January 31st, and the Season 5 premium battle pass has been made free. MultiVersus director Tony Huynh shared closing thoughts, addressing player concerns.

The game's final sunset is scheduled for May 30th at 9 am PT. While the community grieves the loss, they also celebrate the final, improved version of the game, sharing memes and reminiscing about what could have been. The situation serves as a cautionary tale and a testament to the power of community feedback, even in the face of a game's demise.
