Reggie Fils-Aimé Praises Wii Sports as Switch 2 Tour Sparks Outrage

by Nova Sep 30,2025

Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé has referenced Wii Sports' bundling history in subtle tweets addressing fan backlash over Nintendo charging for Switch 2 tutorial software Welcome Tour.

Beyond controversy surrounding Switch 2's $449.99 MSRP and $79.99 pricing for Mario Kart World, criticism erupted over Nintendo monetizing what many expected to be a free instructional experience.

Nintendo unveiled Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour during last week's Direct presentation. This software companion launches alongside Switch 2 in June, offering an interactive hardware showcase presented through game mechanics.

Welcome Tour delivers a "virtual exhibition" of Switch 2's capabilities. Nintendo describes it as revealing "system features through tech demos, minigames and interactive experiences that highlight functionality users might otherwise never discover."

The Direct footage showed player avatars exploring oversized Switch 2 models while learning hardware facts, accompanied by demo games including Speed Golf, Dodge the Spiked Balls, and Maracas Physics Demo.

IGN verified Welcome Tour carries a $9.99 digital-only price. While cheaper than full Switch 2 titles, fans argue it should emulate PlayStation 5's free pack-in Astro's Playroom rather than require separate purchase.

Fils-Aimé responded by tweeting archived interview clips recounting his famous debate with Shigeru Miyamoto over bundling Wii Sports—eventually included free with Wii consoles worldwide except Japan.

Additional clips highlighted similar packaging debates regarding Wii Play's controller bundle—another commercial success despite Miyamoto's initial objections.

While avoiding direct commentary, Fils-Aimé's tweets clearly reference historical precedents favoring free pack-in software's commercial benefits.

Nintendo of America VP Bill Trinen defended Welcome Tour's pricing following recent Switch 2 preview events, emphasizing its depth beyond initial demonstrations:

"It's a robust experience featuring extensive hardware insights," Trinen explained. "For tech enthusiasts wanting deeper system understanding beyond basic tutorials, we believe $9.99 reflects appropriate value."

The Welcome Tour debate continues alongside discussions of Nintendo's broader Switch 2 pricing strategy, including Trinen's responses to $80 game pricing and the console's premium positioning.
