Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

by Adam Jan 23,2025

Securing your shelter in the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid is crucial. While finding a safe haven is relatively straightforward, fortifying it against the undead hordes is a different challenge altogether. This guide focuses on a fundamental defensive measure: barricading windows.

Constructing Basic Window Barricades in Project Zomboid

To effectively barricade a window, you'll need specific materials: a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these, right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window can support up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Locating Necessary Supplies

Hammers and nails are typically found in realistic locations – toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are commonly discovered at construction sites. In a pinch, you can dismantle wooden furniture (shelves, chairs) to obtain planks. Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items directly.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access. The more planks installed, the longer it takes for them to breach the defense. To remove planks, right-click the boards and choose "Remove." You'll need a claw hammer or crowbar for this task.

Limitations and Alternatives

Large furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) are ineffective as window barriers; characters and zombies will pass right through them. While these items are useless for defense, knowing how to move furniture is useful for interior design.

More robust barricades can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, but this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
