In Path of Exile 2, the Atlas map introduces four thrilling endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. The Expedition system, originally featured in the Expedition League, has been revitalized as a permanent endgame feature in PoE 2. This guide will walk you through how to engage with Expeditions, master the Detonation and Explosives mechanics, navigate the Expedition Passive Skill Tree, and uncover the unique rewards available from this dynamic endgame system.
On the Atlas screen, map nodes with guaranteed endgame events are clearly marked with distinct icons. An Expedition is indicated by an ethereal light blue icon featuring a spiral-like shape. To ensure an Expedition encounter, place an Expedition Precursor Tablet into a completed Lost Tower slot on the Atlas screen.
Once you load into a map with an Expedition, explore until you find an area marked with Markers and a tent housing one of four NPCs. These NPCs will introduce you to the event's basics, but understanding the full mechanics of the Expedition is crucial.
Central to the Expedition is the Detonator, accompanied by a new Explosives UI element in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Your objective is to strategically place Explosives to maximize the spawning of Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests.
To use Explosives, click the Explosives button and hover over the Expedition area to see the area of effect. Ensure the green circle encompasses the desired Markers without overlapping for optimal farming. After placing all Explosives, return to the Detonator to activate them, spawning Runic Monsters and starting the event.
If you die during an Expedition, the map resets as usual. However, you can retreat if overwhelmed and return later to tackle the Excavated enemies with powerful AoE abilities.
Expeditions offer the chance to obtain Expedition Logbooks from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests. To access the Expedition Map, take a Logbook to Dannig in your Hideout and slot it into the bottom slot on the Expedition Map screen, then click "Open Portals". Logbook Portals will appear around the Map Device, leading to an expansive Expedition event with over triple the usual Explosives.
The Expedition Pinnacle Map introduces the Pinnacle Boss, Olroth. His appearance isn't guaranteed but becomes more likely with higher-level maps. A skull on the minimap indicates Olroth's presence; strategically place your Explosives to reach him. Defeating Olroth grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, essential for enhancing your Expedition experience.
Accessible via the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the Expedition event by boosting Expedition Currency rewards, increasing Monster spawns, and amplifying Remnant effects.
To view your Expedition passives, open your Atlas Map, select the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu at the top-left, and navigate to the top-right section of the Atlas Skill Tree.
The Expedition Passive Skill Tree features a distinctive glowing blue spiral pattern, with eight Notable nodes and eight nodes that ramp up Logbook and Olroth difficulty. Earning 2x Expedition Passive Skill points by defeating Olroth necessitates increasing the Pinnacle encounter's difficulty for each new Notable node.
Notable Expedition Passive | Effect | Requirements |
---|---|---|
Extreme Archaeology | Reduces Explosives to 1 total, but gives a 150% boost to radius, 100% boost to placement range, and 20% less enemy Life | N/A |
Disturbed Rest | Maps contain 50% more Runic Monster Flags | N/A |
Detailed Records | 50% more Logbooks will drop by Runic Monsters, and Logbooks will always spawn with 3x Modifiers | Disturbed Rest |
Timed Detonations | 50% more Artifacts will drop from Runic Monsters, and Detonation chains travel 50% faster | N/A |
Legendary Battles | 50% more Rare monsters in Expeditions, 50% more Exotic Coinage drops from Runic Monsters | Timed Detonations |
Frail Treasures | Expeditions always contain 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds | N/A |
Weight of History | 35% boost to Remnant effects | N/A |
Unearthed Anomalies | Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier | Weight of History |
Recommended nodes include 'Disturbed Rest', 'Detailed Records', and 'Timed Detonations' for substantial reward boosts with minimal downsides. Next, pursue 'Weight of History', 'Unearthed Anomalies', and 'Legendary Battles' for enhanced rewards despite increased difficulty. Steer clear of 'Extreme Archaeology' due to its significant reduction in Explosives, which drastically cuts potential rewards and is costly to respec.
### Artifacts & Coinage Currencies Are Used For Purchasing Gear
The primary rewards from Expeditions are Artifacts, which come in four types, each associated with a specific vendor:
Reward | ![]() | Black Scythe Artifact | Order Artifact | Sun Artifact | Exotic Coinage |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Use | Used for trade with Gwennen | Used for trade with Tujen | Used for trade with Rog | Used for trade with Dannig | Refreshes the inventory of any Expedition vendor |
Gear | Weapons | Belts and Jewelry | Armor | Used to acquire other Artifacts | N/A |
Each Expedition features one vendor, limiting access to a single vendor's inventory per encounter. Artifacts remain in your inventory post-map completion, so carry them into Expedition Maps. Exotic Coinage, another Expedition reward, refreshes any Expedition vendor's inventory.
Expedition Logbooks, dropped from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock unique Expedition Maps. Bring a Logbook to Dannig to access different Expedition zones. There's a chance for the Pinnacle Boss, Olroth, to appear in these maps. Defeating Olroth not only grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points but also high-tier Currency and exclusive Uniques. As you ramp up the difficulty of your Expedition Maps and Logbooks, Olroth's spawn rate and the quality of his drops increase.
