Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, it's back with a completely revamped port from developer Hemisphere Games.
For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning puzzle where you absorb smaller organisms while evading larger ones. Its simple yet engaging premise made it a hit, but Android users have been unable to experience it until now.
Years after its 2010 debut, Osmos is finally available on Google Play with a modern, optimized port. This marks the first time in years that the game is playable on current Android operating systems.
Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that initial Android development relied on Apportable, a porting studio that subsequently closed, hindering further updates. The game was eventually removed from the Play Store due to incompatibility with modern 64-bit Android systems. This new release rectifies that issue with a completely rebuilt port.
A Cellular Masterpiece
If you need further convincing, check out the gameplay trailer (above). Osmos' innovative mechanics have influenced countless subsequent games, and its absence from the early days of social media is a missed opportunity – it would undoubtedly be a viral sensation on platforms like TikTok.
Osmos offers a nostalgic yet rewarding experience, reminiscent of a time when mobile gaming felt boundless. While it might be a blast from the past, it remains a captivating and challenging puzzle game.
