The Last of Us Season 3 Greenlit Ahead of S2 Debut

by Camila Oct 24,2025

Breaking news confirms what many anticipated: HBO's The Last of Us has officially secured a Season 3 renewal, announced mere days before Season 2's Max premiere.

"Every sacrifice matters," Max declared across its social platforms on April 9, accompanying the Season 3 announcement with a vividly burning crimson flare in their teaser video's corner.

The series debuted spectacularly in January 2023, widely praised as the finest video game adaptation to date. Its first season earned eight Emmy wins from 24 nominations. Season 2 reunites stars Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal as Ellie and Joel, introducing Kaitlyn Dever as vengeance-driven soldier Abby. New cast members include Young Mazino (Beef), Isabelle Merced (Alien: Romulus), Danny Ramirez (Captain America: Brave New World), alongside veterans Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Wright.

Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann recently discussed with IGN the persistent "Was Joel justified?" debate that's defined the franchise since the 2013 game.

"Joel made the right choice," stated Naughty Dog's Druckmann. "As a father, I'd hope to act similarly to protect my child." Mazin countered: "While I'd likely mirror Joel's actions in his shoes, morally I aspire to choose differently. That ethical tension makes the first game's ending profoundly compelling—it refuses easy answers."

Season 2 launches on Max April 13, 2025, with Season 3's timeline remaining undetermined. Explore IGN's spoiler-free Season 2 review for deeper insights.
