Nvidia Issues RTX 5090 and 5080 Stock Shortage Warning to PC Gamers Ahead of Hotly Anticipated Release Date

by Lucas Feb 22,2025

The highly anticipated Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards are set to launch on January 30th. However, concerns regarding significant stock shortages are circulating, fueled by reports from retailers and manufacturers.

Potential buyers are already lining up, anticipating the release of these coveted GPUs, despite their premium prices ($1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080). MSI, a major manufacturer, attributes the initial scarcity to the Lunar New Year, predicting stock levels will improve in February.

Retailers have echoed these concerns, with some reporting extremely limited initial allocations of the RTX 5090. One retailer even described the RTX 5090 launch as having "the worst availability."

In response to the growing anxiety, Nvidia issued a statement acknowledging the high demand and the possibility of stock-outs. The company assures customers that they and their partners are actively working to increase supply.

Despite Nvidia's statement, the anticipated scarcity is creating opportunities for scalpers. Several pre-sale listings on eBay are already offering the RTX 5090 at exorbitant markups, with one listing showing a price increase of over 187% above the MSRP.

Adding to Nvidia's challenges this week, the company's share price experienced a significant drop following the announcement of a new Chinese AI model, DeepSeek, raising concerns about the future of Nvidia's datacenter GPU sales.
