Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Have a New Gimmick

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Potential Mouse Mode?

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: operating as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence, uncovered by Famiboards user LiC, originates from Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This source, previously responsible for numerous Switch 2 leaks, recently revealed entries detailing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles"—a term for the bottom of computer mice—intended for "game console handles." The presence of "mouse soles" in the parts list strongly hints at a potential mouse-like functionality.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These designations are absent from public component databases, suggesting they represent unreleased products. The reported 90 x 90mm size of these tape pieces seems large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transforming into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even provides a plastic housing to facilitate this mode. This, coupled with the rumored magnetic rails for attaching controllers on the Switch 2 (a feature also present in the Legion GO), suggests potential design similarities between the two devices.
