Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage condemns the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He made this statement during his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor in Dream Scenario, as reported by Variety.

Cage emphasized his belief in the irreplaceable role of human experience in acting: "Robots cannot reflect the human condition." He argued that allowing AI to manipulate even slightly an actor's performance would ultimately compromise the integrity and authenticity of art, prioritizing financial gain over artistic merit. He stressed the importance of art, including acting, in reflecting the human condition through a deeply human process of emotional and thoughtful recreation – a task he believes AI is incapable of accomplishing. He warned that unchecked AI influence would result in art lacking heart, losing its edge, and becoming bland, ultimately presenting a robotic, rather than human, perspective on life.

Cage's concerns echo those of other actors, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI has been more extensively used. Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have voiced their opposition, citing concerns about AI's potential to negatively impact voice actors' livelihoods. Cockle acknowledged AI's inevitability but highlighted its inherent dangers.

Filmmakers are also divided on the issue. Tim Burton expressed his unease, describing AI-generated art as "very disturbing," while Zack Snyder advocates for embracing AI's potential rather than resisting it.
