MultiVersus to Shut Down When Season 5 Concludes in May

by Stella Feb 21,2025

Player First Games announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, its Warner Bros. platform fighter. Season 5, launching February 4th, will be the game's last, concluding on May 30th, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio detailed the discontinuation of support in a blog post.

While online play will cease on May 30th, Player First assures players that offline access to all earned and purchased content will remain via local and training modes. The team expressed gratitude for player support in a heartfelt message.

It's been an incredible ride, MVPs. Thank you for all the support. For more details, please visit our blog post https://t.co/tLVzpA9JaQ and FAQ https://t.co/XKuxAnd26j. pic.twitter.com/VLzBDbP0GQ

Real-money transactions are now unavailable, but Gleamium and character tokens can still be used until the May 30th deadline. The game will be delisted from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store concurrently.

MultiVersus' closure follows reports of its underperformance for Warner Bros. Discovery, resulting in a significant $100 million writedown, contributing to a larger $300 million total for the games sector. This follows the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and coincides with the departure of Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad. CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels highlighted MultiVersus' contribution to the company's financial challenges during a November call.

Despite the shutdown, Season 5 will introduce new characters: Lola Bunny (unlockable via daily calendar) and Aquaman (battle pass). This final season will offer a concluding chapter for the free-to-play title, days before its one-year anniversary.
