With the Thunderbolts set to make their highly anticipated live-action debut, Marvel Comics is ramping up its publishing plans around the franchise. The team is already playing a pivotal role in the *One World Under Doom* crossover event, and shortly after the movie hits theaters, readers will be introduced to an all-new iteration of the Thunderbolts in a brand-new comic series.
Making waves with its bold direction, Marvel has announced *New Thunderbolts\**, a fresh ongoing series penned by Sam Humphries (known for *Uncanny X-Force*) and illustrated by Ton Lima (*West Coast Avengers*), with striking cover art provided by Stephen Segovia. While the timing of this release aligns with the release of the *Thunderbolts\** film, the creative team is forging a unique path forward. Bucky Barnes takes the helm as team leader—a nod to his prominence in both the cinematic and comic universes—though the roster itself diverges significantly from the movie version. This new lineup features a mix of powerhouse characters, some of whom are joining the Thunderbolts for the very first time. Among them are Clea, Wolverine (Laura Kinney), Namor, Hulk, and Carnage—now under the control of ex-Venom host Eddie Brock.
The series kicks off with Bucky Barnes and Black Widow confronting a dire new threat: sinister doppelgängers of the Illuminati who have emerged to destabilize the entire Marvel Universe. In response, Bucky recruits a team of elite, high-powered individuals to combat this existential danger. However, managing such a volatile and unconventional group—composed of warriors, monsters, and killers—is no easy task.
"I love every iteration of Thunderbolts,” said Humphries in a recent Marvel press statement. “I'm thrilled to continue the franchise's proud tradition of hard-hitting action, powder keg personalities, and explosive surprises into a new era. This is a gang of seven of the biggest badasses and loose cannons from different corners of the Marvel Universe. Assembling a super team is like inviting the right combination of guests to a dinner party. So I imagined a dangerous, disastrous, unhinged Marvel dinner party—and went with that."
Artist Ton Lima shared his enthusiasm for the project: "I'm having a blast working on this book with Mr. Humphries and the team. Look at this lineup—it’s insane. These characters don’t waste time talking; they jump straight into the action! And that’s the most fun part to draw. None of them are known for pulling punches or holding back, so I can't either."
