The temporary shutdown of TikTok in the US on January 19th unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This disruption resulted in a 24-hour outage before the game was restored, although in-app purchases remain unavailable.
The developers, Second Dinner Studios, attributed the issue to political risks surrounding TikTok's ongoing negotiations to sell a 50% stake to a US-based entity. This sale has only been granted a 90-day extension, leaving Marvel Snap vulnerable to future disruptions should the deal fail. As a preventative measure, Second Dinner is exploring a publisher change and migrating some services in-house, as announced on X (formerly Twitter).
While the game is back online, players continue to report authorization problems. PC users via Steam remained unaffected. Second Dinner expressed surprise at the event and assured players via an official X statement that "Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress." The lack of prior warning, leaving players unaware of the potential lockout and continuing to make in-game purchases, added to the frustration. Further updates are promised.
