NetEase Games Warns Marvel Rivals Players About Modding Consequences
NetEase Games has issued a stern warning to Marvel Rivals players, stating that unauthorized game modifications may result in permanent account bans. The developer clarified that all forms of modding - whether cosmetic character alterations or gameplay enhancements - violate the game's terms of service.
The warning coincided with Marvel Rivals' Season 1 launch, which introduced gameplay balancing adjustments and debuted Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic as playable characters from the Fantastic Four roster. While Human Torch and The Thing will join later, the update also included hidden measures to deter modding - though players reportedly found workarounds quickly.
Since its December 2024 release, Marvel Rivals has gained significant popularity among Marvel fans and shooter enthusiasts alike, earning a nomination for Online Game of the Year at the upcoming DICE Awards 2025.
Despite NetEase's attempts to implement hash-checking technology in Season 1 to detect modifications, modders have circumvented these protections. Notably, a modder named Prafit publicly released a workaround on Nexus Mods, explicitly warning users about the potential ban risks.
The modding controversy escalated when another creator adapted Mister Fantastic's character model to resemble One Piece's Monkey D. Luffy, showcasing the possibilities of character modification despite the developer's restrictions.
While NetEase Games has reinforced its anti-modding stance referencing the game's terms of service, it remains unclear whether actual bans have been implemented against offending players. Some controversial mods have been removed from platforms, but the Season 1 workaround continues to be available.
This situation develops as Marvel Rivals continues to address unrelated false ban reports since launch. The gaming community awaits NetEase's next steps regarding enforcement of its modding policies.
