Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, recently revealed his wish list for potential game crossovers, sparking excitement among fans. His musings, initially sparked by a playful exchange with the Trench Crusade team on Twitter, included iconic franchises like Starship Troopers, Terminator, and Warhammer 40,000. While the idea of Helldivers battling alongside (or against) these legendary characters is undeniably appealing, Pilestedt cautioned against oversaturation.

Pilestedt's expanded list encompasses sci-fi giants such as Alien, Predator, Star Wars, and Blade Runner. However, he emphasized the potential risk of diluting Helldivers 2's unique satirical and militaristic identity if too many crossovers were implemented. He stressed that a flood of collaborations could result in a game experience that feels less like Helldivers and more like a generic mashup.

The appeal of crossovers in live-service games is undeniable, and Helldivers 2's intense combat and alien warfare setting seemingly lends itself to such partnerships. Yet, Pilestedt's prioritization of maintaining the game's cohesive universe is commendable, especially considering the trend of live-service titles often overloading on crossover content to the detriment of their original vision.

While Pilestedt remains open to the possibility of both large and small-scale crossovers – perhaps a single weapon or character skin acquired via in-game currency – he underscored that these are merely personal preferences and no decisions have been finalized. The final choice regarding the inclusion of crossovers rests with the developers. The prospect of Super Earth soldiers facing Xenomorphs alongside Jango Fett or the Terminator is certainly intriguing, but whether this will ever become reality remains to be seen.
