A Fresh Vision: Remaking Frostpunk with Unreal Engine

In a surprising yet welcome move, developer 11 bit Studios revealed Frostpunk 1886—a complete reimagining of the original title—via a Twitter (X) post on April 24. Unlike previous sequels or expansions, this project aims to rebuild the game from the ground up using Unreal Engine, offering improved graphics, higher resolution textures, and an overall modernized presentation.

The development team also shared additional details in a dedicated Steam post on the same day, emphasizing their creative goals for the remake. Moving away from their legacy Liquid Engine used in the original Frostpunk, the studio expressed how much potential they believe the first game had if built on a more advanced framework—something they were able to explore fully with Frostpunk 2, which was developed in Unreal Engine 5.

As part of this ambitious remake, players can look forward to a brand-new Purpose Path, long-awaited mod support, and other enhancements that stay true to the spirit of the original while delivering a fresh and immersive experience.

According to the developers, Frostpunk 1886 is currently in active development, with an anticipated release date set for 2027. The studio envisions this remake as both an entry point for newcomers and a rewarding revisit for longtime fans of the series.

11 bit Studios also teased plans for future downloadable content (DLCs), ensuring the world of Frostpunk continues to expand. Additionally, the team has committed to a faster development cycle moving forward, aiming to deliver high-quality games more frequently than every five years—an effort that begins with Frostpunk 1886.

While fans await the remake, they can continue enjoying Frostpunk 2, including its upcoming free major update arriving May 8, followed by a console launch this summer. The sequel is currently available on PC, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions scheduled for release in the near future.
