For much of the 21st century, Final Fantasy games were PlayStation exclusives. However, a nearly 40-year legacy necessitates broader accessibility for newer generations. This, coupled with business considerations, has driven publishers towards multi-platform releases. Beyond PC ports, Square Enix has significantly expanded the series' presence on Nintendo handhelds through remasters and special editions.
This isn't entirely new territory. The Final Fantasy and Nintendo relationship began early, with the original game launching on the Famicom in 1987. In fact, the first six mainline entries debuted on Nintendo platforms before Square Enix shifted to PlayStation as the series' primary home with Final Fantasy VII.
With Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth's PC launch and a significant Magic: The Gathering expansion bringing Final Fantasy back into the spotlight in 2025, many are eager to explore the series. Below is a complete list of Final Fantasy games available on the Nintendo Switch, perfect for newcomers and veterans alike.
Twenty Final Fantasy games are playable on the Switch—twelve mainline titles, one prequel, and seven spin-offs. They're categorized below: mainline games (by original release date) and others (by Switch release date).
Author's Note: No Final Fantasy games are available through Nintendo Switch Online. Most retro titles have received updates and are available for individual purchase (included in the list below).
The first six Final Fantasy games are available in Square Enix's Pixel Remaster collection, featuring updated graphics, soundtracks, UIs, and galleries. For the classic Final Fantasy experience, this is the ideal choice. Available individually or as a bundle.
(The remaining mainline and other Final Fantasy game entries will follow a similar format, maintaining the consistent style and removing unnecessary repetition. Images and other elements will be retained.)
