Final Fantasy IX Marks Quarter-Century Milestone

Illustrated Storybook Priced at 1,320 Yen on Japanese Retail Platforms

Originally launched on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX expands its silver anniversary celebration with the publication of "Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure." This 44-page illustrated prequel, created by Event Designer Kazuhiko Aoki and Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana, reveals untold moments between the Black Mage Vivi and his adoptive grandfather Quan prior to Vivi's adventure in Alexandria.

This collaboration represents Aoki and Itahana's second Final Fantasy picture book project. Their previous work, "Chocobo and the Airship," debuted in Japan during 2021 before receiving global distribution in 2023. The new Vivi-themed storybook is currently available digitally and physically through Amazon Japan and Rakuten at 1,320 yen (about $9 USD).

Complementing the picture book release, Square Enix has introduced an extensive Final Fantasy IX merchandise collection. While certain items remain Japan-exclusive, international fans can purchase plush toys, Vivi-styled apparel, and a special vinyl record featuring both classic tracks and new recordings through Square Enix's online store. These anniversary products will also be available at temporary Osaka and Tokyo store locations opening through July 2025.

Special Anniversary Eyewear Collection Partnership

As part of the anniversary festivities, Square Enix has partnered with Japanese eyewear brand Zoff for an exclusive Final Fantasy IX glasses collection. The limited series includes three distinctive frame designs, each accompanied by branded cleaning cloths and protective cases. Currently, these optical frames are only available through select Zoff retail locations:
