RuneScape: Dragonwilds made headlines with a surprise early access release announcement. During the early access livestream on April 16, developer Jagex revealed that the game is now accessible on Steam, a mere few weeks following its first trailer release.

The gaming community was taken aback as Dragonwilds had only recently been available for wishlisting on Steam starting April 1, with its first official gameplay teaser released on April 2. Initially introduced to the public in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex began alpha testing signups for a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The game's official unveiling as RuneScape: Dragonwilds occurred on March 31, 2025.

Estimated Official Release Date in Early 2026

Developers are targeting an official release for Dragonwilds in early 2026. They emphasized their commitment to delivering a polished and enjoyable experience, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to make sure that our players get a complete, satisfying experience that you’ll want to revisit with friends again and again."

Jesse America, Jagex's Executive Producer, highlighted that Dragonwilds represents a fresh take on the RuneScape universe, designed for both long-time fans and newcomers. He noted, "Throughout Early Access, we’ll be updating the game regularly with new content and features, while listening closely to the community to deliver an iconic open world survival crafting game that is loved equally by our biggest RuneScape fans and new players alike."

Early Access Roadmap Revealed

Jagex has shared an exciting early access roadmap, outlining the updates players can expect. The spotlight feature is the new region, Fellhollow, a realm caught between life and death, governed by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This region is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld, with the iconic RuneScape character Death accompanying players on this adventure.

Players can look forward to new quests, lore, gear, and music, along with enhanced skills in magic, ranged, and farming. The game will also introduce Lesser Dragons as a new enemy type, dragon slayer gear, and both hardcore and creative modes. While specific release dates for these updates haven't been disclosed, Jagex promises continuous enhancements throughout the early access period.

Purchasing Dragonwilds during its early access phase comes with exclusive in-game rewards. As per the game's Steam page, "Early Adopters" will receive:
