Crytek Announces Layoffs Affecting 15% of its Workforce
Game developer Crytek has announced a reduction in its workforce, impacting approximately 60 employees, or 15% of its 400-person staff. The decision, announced via a tweet and statement from founder Avni Yerli, cites challenging market conditions and the need for financial sustainability.
While the company's successful title, Hunt: Showdown, continues to grow, Crytek's efforts to transition staff to this project and reduce operational costs proved insufficient to avoid layoffs. The cuts affect both development teams and shared services. Crytek has pledged to provide severance packages and career support to affected employees.
Yerli's full statement emphasizes the difficult nature of the decision and highlights the company's commitment to Hunt: Showdown's continued growth and development. The statement also reaffirms Crytek's dedication to its CRYENGINE technology.
The news follows the earlier, unannounced cancellation of a battle royale-inspired Crysis project, codenamed Crysis Next, and the subsequent postponement of Crysis 4 in Q3 2024. The Crysis franchise, known for its visually stunning graphics and demanding system requirements, last saw a mainline release with Crysis 3 in 2013. While remasters of earlier titles have been released, updates on Crysis 4 have been scarce since its announcement in January 2022. The iconic phrase, "But can it run Crysis?", born from the original game's demanding performance requirements, remains a testament to the series' legacy.
