Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Fighting Lu Bu is a formidable challenge. In my experience with Dynasty Warriors: Origins, it took over an hour to defeat him. Yet, there are compelling reasons to take on this daunting task.

First, there's the allure of bragging rights. Overcoming Lu Bu is a prestigious achievement. Additionally, you might not have a choice if you align with Shu or Wei, as you'll face him in Chapter 4 during the Battle of Xiapi. Moreover, defeating him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only earns you the "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, in the post-game. These incentives make battling Lu Bu highly rewarding.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Preparation is key before facing Lu Bu. Equip a weapon capable of multiple hits and staggering, such as a sword, along with Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a broad range. In my battle, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessorize with items like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell to boost health and defense, as Lu Bu's attacks are devastating. Choose a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, crucial for this fight.

During this phase, Lu Bu will typically ride his horse, Red Hare, charging around the battlefield. He's swift but will pause occasionally, providing opportunities to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited area of effect, except for Red Hare's ground-shaking jump. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, signaling the start of the real battle.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His swift attacks and ability to dash across the battlefield, often surrounded by a red aura, make him immune to staggering. He charges in sets of three, and if he charges without his spear, he's attempting to grab you, which can severely deplete your health—evade these moves carefully.

His most lethal move occurs when he glows orange, preparing to launch three massive arrows thrice, capable of juggling and decimating your health. Counter this with a long-range Battle Art like Absconding Slash. Avoid close-quarters moves like Palm Strike, as they are fatal in this situation. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can save you from a fatal mistake.

Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling during this phase. Rapid consecutive hits will quickly charge your Battle Arts and diminish his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react swiftly to his attacks, and remember, evasion is your best defense.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently reduced, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. He becomes immune to staggering and unleashes relentless volleys of attacks. Your goal is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou Attack. Use all your remaining resources—activate your Musou attacks, deploy Battle Arts, and strike with speed and force. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately restart it, forcing you to begin this phase anew. Breaking his Fortitude here is crucial to ending the battle and defeating this seemingly invincible foe.

And that’s how to defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
