Bloodborne, the critically acclaimed RPG released in 2015, continues to captivate fans who eagerly await a remastered version. The gothic city of Yharnam has left a lasting impression, and the community's desire to experience it on modern consoles is palpable. While no official announcements have been made, recent Instagram posts from FromSoftware and PlayStation Italia have reignited the fervor surrounding the game's potential return.
On August 24, FromSoftware shared three evocative images tagged with "#bloodborne." One image showcased Djura, the veteran hunter from Old Yharnam, while the others depicted the player Hunter navigating the haunting streets of Yharnam and the eerie graveyards of Charnel Lane. These posts, whether a nostalgic nod or a tease, have sent fans into a frenzy, scouring every detail for hints of a remaster.
Adding to the speculation, PlayStation Italia posted a similar update on August 17. Their caption, when translated, invited fans to "Swipe to see some of Bloodborne’s most iconic locations! A journey through gothic atmospheres and dark mysteries. Which is your favorite?" The comments section quickly filled with fans expressing their longing for a return to Yharnam, with many playfully suggesting that the most iconic location would be on PC or modern consoles.
Originally released exclusively for the PS4 in 2015, Bloodborne has garnered a dedicated following, often hailed as one of the greatest video games ever created. Despite its acclaim, it has yet to see a sequel or remaster, leaving fans hopeful yet cautious.
The successful 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls, another FromSoftware classic, serves as a beacon of hope for a Bloodborne revival. However, the long wait for Demon’s Souls' remake, over a decade, tempers this excitement. As Bloodborne approaches its tenth anniversary, the anticipation for a remastered version intensifies.
In a February interview with Eurogamer, Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted at the potential for a remaster, emphasizing the value of modern hardware. "I think having new hardware is definitely a part of what gives these remakes value," Miyazaki stated. "However, I wouldn’t say that’s the be all and end all. I think purely from a user perspective, modern hardware also allows more players to appreciate all the games. And so, it ends up being a simple reason, but as a fellow player, I think that accessibility is important."
Despite Miyazaki's encouraging words, the final decision rests with Sony, as they hold the IP rights to Bloodborne, unlike FromSoftware's full ownership of Elden Ring. In an interview with IGN, Miyazaki acknowledged this limitation, saying, "Unfortunately, and I’ve said this in other interviews, it’s not in my place to talk about Bloodborne specifically. We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware. For me personally, it was a great project, and I have a lot of great memories for that game, but we’re not at liberty to speak to it."
The passionate Bloodborne community continues to yearn for a remake. Despite its critical success and strong sales, Sony has not expanded its availability beyond the PlayStation 4. As speculation mounts, only time will reveal whether the whispers of a Bloodborne remaster will materialize into a reality that fans can finally embrace.
