Xbox and Halo Gear Up for 25th Anniversary Celebrations: Licensing and Merchandising Expansion Unveiled
With the 25th anniversary of both the first Halo game and the Xbox console fast approaching, Xbox has confirmed major celebratory plans are underway. This news, along with a glimpse into their future business strategy, was revealed in a recent interview.
Xbox is preparing extensive celebrations for Halo, the iconic military sci-fi shooter franchise developed by 343 Industries. In an interview with License Global Magazine, John Friend, Xbox's head of consumer products, discussed the company's achievements and its growing focus on licensing and merchandising. This strategic shift mirrors the successful cross-media expansions seen with franchises like Fallout and Minecraft, which have branched into TV and film.
Friend confirmed that Xbox is actively "building plans" for the 25th anniversary of both Halo and the Xbox console, alongside other franchise milestones. He highlighted Xbox's rich portfolio, including "World of Warcraft," "Call of Duty," and "StarCraft," emphasizing the importance of celebrating the enduring legacy and active communities surrounding these titles. While specifics remain undisclosed, the anticipation is high.
Halo's 25th anniversary falls in 2026. The franchise boasts over $6 billion in revenue since the debut of Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001. Beyond its financial success, the game holds immense historical significance as the Xbox console's launch title (November 15, 2001). Halo's influence extends beyond gaming, with novels, comics, and now, the critically acclaimed Paramount+ TV series.
Friend stressed the importance of a thoughtful approach, stating, "It’s important to assess a franchise and a community...and make sure that you’re designing a program that’s additive to fans and building fandom."
Meanwhile, Halo 3: ODST recently marked its 15th anniversary with a commemorative 100-second YouTube video, reminiscing about the game's impact and thanking fans.
Halo 3: ODST is currently playable on PC as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which also includes Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4.
