The possibility of Wind Waker HD being ported to the Switch 2 remains open, even as the original GameCube version is set to hit the new console. Dive deeper into Nintendo's plans and the enhancements of Wind Waker HD over its predecessor.
During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was revealed that the beloved GameCube version of Wind Waker will be making its way to the Switch 2. This news sparked curiosity among fans about the fate of Wind Waker HD on the upcoming console.
Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, addressed these concerns. In an episode of Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9, host Tim Gettys shared insights from his conversation with Bihldorff at a Switch 2 press event in New York. When asked if the availability of Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) would prevent a Switch 2 port of the Wii U's Wind Waker HD, Bihldorff responded, "No, all options are on the table." This leaves the door open for a potential HD version release, though nothing has been finalized.
Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, Wind Waker captured the hearts of many. The HD version, released on the Wii U in 2013, brought significant enhancements. These include a resolution upgrade from 480p to HD, improved lighting, the addition of gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing mechanics, and other gameplay refinements. Given that the GameCube library is exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD might be the only chance for original Switch owners to experience these improvements.
Additionally, the game libraries for Nintendo Switch Online are being rebranded to Nintendo Classics. Nintendo has announced that "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon be able to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Nintendo Switch 2, with more games on the horizon." These titles will also feature options like a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
