Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of dormancy. This new installment, the first entirely new entry in almost 20 years, is being developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
The recently released footage, shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, offers a glimpse into the game's visual style. While not actual gameplay, the in-engine demonstration showcases a significant visual evolution for the franchise. The hyper-stylized polygons of earlier titles are being replaced by a more realistic aesthetic, blending elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The video features Akira, the series' iconic character, in two distinct outfits, notably deviating from his traditional bandana and spiky hairstyle.
The footage, though impeccably choreographed, clearly highlights its staged nature. The smooth, precisely timed combat sequences resemble a cinematic fight scene more than a typical fighting game recording. This polished presentation, however, serves to generate excitement for the game's potential. With other major fighting game franchises recently releasing new titles, Virtua Fighter's comeback promises to further solidify the 2020s as a golden age for the genre.
The development team, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, is also responsible for Sega's announced Project Century and previously co-developed the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster. Known for their work on the acclaimed Yakuza series (beginning with Yakuza 5), their involvement suggests a fresh, modern approach to the Virtua Fighter formula.
While details remain scarce beyond director Riichirou Yamada's previous comments on the game's direction, Sega's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter brand is evident. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared in the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The anticipation surrounding this new entry is palpable, and the recent footage only serves to heighten the excitement.
