How to Unlock the Gunsmithing Skill in Atomfall

Unlocking the crafting recipes for upgraded weapons in *Atomfall* begins with acquiring the Gunsmithing skill. This survival skill can be learned by reading the Crafting Manual, which can be a challenging find. Fortunately, there's a straightforward approach to obtaining it.

Visit Morris at his Village Shop in Wyndham. He possesses a copy of the Crafting Manual, but it won't be handed over easily. To get it, you'll need to engage in some cunning negotiation and a bit of blackmail. Upon entering St. Katherine’s Church, you'll learn about the recent murder of Maisie, which the Vicar is keen to cover up. Further investigation will lead you to evidence implicating Morris in the crime. This evidence is located in the Brewery Cellar at coordinates 30.5 E, 80.5 N, west of Wyndham Village. Inside the cellar, find and read the note titled "Kill the One They Call Maisie".

Once you've secured the evidence, return to Morris at the Village Shop, located at 33.3 E, 79.9 N. Engage in dialogue that pressures Morris without outright threatening him until you reach the "Bargaining" option. Choose this to receive the Crafting Manual in exchange for your silence about his involvement in the crime.

Alternatively, you can find the Crafting Manual in the D Section of The Interchange, though this method is more challenging and time-consuming.

After obtaining and reading the Crafting Manual, you'll need to spend 7 Training Stimulants to unlock the Gunsmith skill. This skill will grant you access to recipes for crafting upgraded weapons. Upon acquiring a weapon, you'll unlock the recipe to craft its next highest tier, progressing from Rusty to Stock, and finally to Pristine. Upgrading a weapon requires two units of the weapon at the previous tier, along with specific amounts of Gun Oil and Scrap, which can vary depending on the weapon.

For instance, to upgrade the Falkirk Battle Rifle to Pristine (as shown above), you'll need 2 Falkirk Battle Rifle (Stock) items, 3 Gun Oil, and 6 Scrap. These materials are commonly found at military installations like Protocol Camps. If you're planning frequent upgrades, consider investing in the Deep Pockets survival skill to increase your capacity for crafting supplies.

Upgrading a weapon to Pristine for the first time will earn you the 'Make do and mend' Achievement or Trophy.
