Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumor

Insider Gaming has reported that the extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe and taking place in Alaska, previously known as Project Maverick, has undergone a complete reboot. Originally intended as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7, the project faced significant changes following an internal review. Despite garnering positive feedback from employees and testers, Ubisoft's management decided to shift most resources to Project Blackbird (Far Cry 7). The multiplayer component was ultimately abandoned when the technical team was reassigned to other projects.

The responsibility for the rebooted project has now been handed over to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio known for its expertise in development support. This shift has resulted in nearly the entire original development team being redirected to work on the next installment of Far Cry.

As reported by insider Tom Henderson in mid-December 2024, Far Cry 7 is set to immerse players in an atmosphere filled with tension and desperation, with time as the main adversary. The game's narrative will focus on the protagonist's mission to rescue their family, who have been kidnapped by a mysterious conspiracy cult. This cult is involved in horrific experiments with hallucinogens on animals and children. Players will be challenged to save their loved ones within a tight 72-hour in-game window, which translates to 24 real-time hours, making time a critical gameplay element that adds intensity and urgency to the experience.

A unique feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This mechanic will not only increase the sense of urgency but also put pressure on players to make swift and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 aims to offer a distinctive gaming experience where every second is crucial, and every choice can lead to significant consequences.
