Top PC Games Enhanced by Controller Use

PC gaming is often synonymous with the use of a keyboard and mouse, and for good reason. Genres such as first-person shooters and strategy games greatly benefit from the precision and control offered by these peripherals. It can be challenging to adjust to alternative control methods for these types of games. Historically, grand and real-time strategy games avoided console ports due to the complexities of adapting their intricate controls to gamepads. However, today, these games are increasingly available on PlayStation and Xbox, though they often perform best on PC.

While most PC games strive to offer robust support for keyboard and mouse setups, certain titles shine brighter when played with a controller. Games that emphasize reflex-based movement or high-octane melee combat are typically ideal for gamepads. Some genres are inherently linked to controllers, especially those whose flagship series originated on consoles before transitioning to PC. So, what are the best controller games on PC?

Updated January 7, 2025 by Mark Sammut: The end of 2024 was marked by a flurry of impressive releases, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force. Most of these titles are not only compatible with keyboard and mouse but are arguably enhanced by them. However, the remastered editions of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 might offer a slightly better experience with a gamepad, though the difference is minimal.

In the coming month, several PC games are slated for release that may excel with a controller, though this remains to be confirmed:

• Freedom Wars Remastered – This revival of a PS Vita game that follows the Monster Hunter formula is likely best enjoyed with a controller.
• Tales of Graces f Remastered – Given the consistent performance of Tales games with gamepads, this remaster is expected to follow suit.
• Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – The combat system of this game, similar to its predecessor, suggests that a controller might enhance the experience on PC.
• Marvel's Spider-Man 2 – As another PS5 exclusive making its way to PC, this game traditionally offers a controller-first experience, though keyboard and mouse will likely suffice.
