Reading is my all-time favorite hobby. While I enjoy playing video games and watching TV, nothing quite compares to diving deep into a captivating book series. My passion for reading was ignited by the Harry Potter books and has since expanded across genres like sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and even non-fiction. However, it was the discovery of the LitRPG genre that truly captured my heart. My fascination with LitRPG was swift and all-consuming, and now it's the only genre I indulge in. If you're curious about exploring the fascinating world of LitRPG, here are my top recommendations that I believe anyone would enjoy.

30See it at AmazonSee it at Audible### Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)
23See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleOne of the great things about every book I've included here is that they are all available with a Kindle Unlimited subscription. Given the extensive number of books in some of these series, I highly recommend a subscription to save money each month. These books are also accessible through an Audible subscription for those who prefer listening over reading.
For those new to the genre, LitRPG stands for literary role-playing game. This means the story incorporates RPG elements similar to those found in video games. While some narratives involve characters being pulled into a video game, the genre is much broader. Every LitRPG includes game-like elements, though not every book is exactly like a video game. The books I've highlighted feature a leveling system and a power hierarchy that the protagonist must navigate through experience. I've included a mix of progression fantasy and LitRPG, which offer similar experiences.
Our Top Pick### He Who Fights With Monsters
95Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleHe Who Fights with Monsters is a fast-paced, action-packed series with some of the most memorable lines I've encountered. Set in a universe with a unique leveling system and compelling characters, it's a must-read for fans of fantasy comedy. This series is my top pick for LitRPG, with each new book maintaining the high quality of the first.
The story follows Jason Asano, who wakes up inside a hedge maze in a magical world, endowed with new powers but without his hair. His quirky and determined approach to his bizarre situation helps him navigate cannibals, monsters, and even personal relationships with ease. Overall, it's a fantastic book with a morally complex protagonist who is easy to root for throughout the series.
The He Who Fights with Monsters series is currently on its 11th book, with more releases on the horizon from author Shirtaloon.
### The Path of Ascension
33Book 1 of 8See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Path of Ascension stands out from other books on this list because the protagonist isn't transported to another world. Instead, it offers an intricately built universe centered around magical dungeon portals called rifts and powerful immortals with unique talents.
The narrative follows Matt, a young orphan driven by dreams of diving into rifts to battle the monsters that killed his parents. However, when he discovers his unique talent is a detrimental Tier 1, his aspirations are crushed. Determined to overcome his shortcomings, Matt embarks on a journey of hard work and perseverance to gain strength.
While the first book hooked me, it was the character development in books two and three that cemented this series as one of my favorites.
### Dungeon Crawler Carl
74Book 1 of 7See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleDungeon Crawler Carl offers a fast-paced adventure that never lets up. It features a unique protagonist who defies common tropes and an unforgettable cat named Princess Donut, arguably the true star of the show. This series is a gem in the LitRPG genre.
The story centers on Carl, who finds himself stuck with his ex-girlfriend's cat when the world ends. Both are thrust into an underground dungeon hosting an intergalactic game show run by advanced races and a deranged AI. With plenty of humor, action, and skill progression, it's a thrilling ride for LitRPG enthusiasts.
The seventh book, released in 2024, maintains the series' initial intrigue. If you enjoy Matt Dinniman's writing, his other works are also worth exploring.
### Unsouled (Cradle Series)
32Book 1 of 12See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleLike The Path of Ascension, the Cradle series doesn't involve the protagonist being pulled into another universe. Instead, it immerses you in a richly detailed existing world with a unique power cultivation system and a relatable main character. Unsouled is an excellent choice for fantasy lovers who may not be fully committed to LitRPG.
The story follows Lindon, born as an "Unsouled" with seemingly no path to the sacred arts of his village. Despite his determination and intellect, he faces a future of powerlessness until a divine intervention offers him a new direction.
With 12 books, the Cradle series concludes satisfyingly. If you enjoy this series, I highly recommend exploring more works by Will Wight, as his writing consistently delivers.
### Beware of Chicken
30Book 1 of 4See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleBeware of Chicken is a uniquely refreshing series on this list. Unlike other featured books packed with action and adventure, this one takes a different approach. It's the story of a man who abandons the path to power to become a farmer.
The narrative follows Jin Rou, a diligent cultivator striving to master martial arts and gain immense power. After his death, a person from Earth takes over his consciousness and chooses a peaceful life as a farmer over the cultivator's path. In his pursuit of tranquility, Jin Rou discovers friendship, family, and an unexpected source of power.
The Beware of Chicken series is delightfully unexpected yet profoundly engaging. It's a perfect choice for a relaxing read that still satisfies LitRPG and fantasy cravings.
### Defiance of the Fall
36Book 1 of 15See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleAs the longest series on my list, Defiance of the Fall is a commitment that pays off richly. The first book kicks off with an exciting start, and the series maintains its momentum as the protagonist faces new challenges.
The story begins with Zachary Atwood, alone when the world integrates into the multiverse. Confronted by a new "System" with notifications and quests, Zac must survive an invading force using only a hatchet and sheer luck. As he fights to reach his family, he unravels the mysteries of his new reality and the multiverse.
With 14 books and a 15th on the way, Defiance of the Fall offers much more than its initial premise. The intricate leveling system and skill progression are uniquely captivating, and the narrative expands significantly once Zac leaves Earth.
### Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)
30Book 1 of 5See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Arcane Ascension series forgoes stat sheets and complex leveling systems, immersing readers in a world governed by powerful god-like beings who offer "attunements" to those who survive their dungeon-like spires. The intricate magic system is fascinating, and the protagonist's enthusiasm in exploring it adds depth to the story.
The narrative is told in the first person by Corin Cadence, who enters the Serpent Spire to earn his attunement after losing his brother there years before. Inside, he uncovers more mysteries and forms bonds with new friends at Lorian Heights Academy.
Sufficiently Advanced Magic was my gateway into LitRPG. Its magic school setting reminiscent of Harry Potter and rich fantasy backdrop make it an excellent introduction to the genre. Andrew Rowe's companion series further expand on the main story and are well worth reading.
### The Grand Game
15Book 1 of 9See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleFans of stealth games will appreciate The Grand Game. Unlike other books on this list, its protagonist is an assassin who prefers subtlety and cunning over direct confrontation.
The story follows Michael, who finds himself in the Forever Kingdom with no memories beyond his name. Amid other newcomers, Michael must navigate a dungeon filled with monsters, level up, and uncover the workings of this world controlled by the elite Powers and his role in the Grand Game.
The Grand Game offers a fresh perspective on the genre that I thoroughly enjoyed. Although there are currently seven books, both book eight and nine are available for preorder.
### The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)
30Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleFor those seeking entry-level LitRPG books, the Completionist Chronicles are an ideal starting point. They feature familiar RPG elements akin to those in an MMO, with unique twists that keep readers hooked.
The story follows Joe, an ex-military medic confined to a wheelchair after a severe injury. When an old friend offers him a chance to fully immerse himself in a new virtual MMORPG, Joe seizes the opportunity and discovers a new life within the game. As a Ritualist, he leverages his unique skills to level up his magic and complete quests.
The series expands rapidly into different worlds in later books, but remains a fun and engaging read throughout.
### Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)
23See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Underworld series is a slow burn, differing from other books where protagonists are whisked away to enchanting yet perilous worlds. Level Up or Die is set in the literal underworld.
The story follows Elorian, an average high-school gamer who suddenly finds himself trapped in the underworld with other gamers. Despite being granted magical powers and the ability to level up infinitely, none of them are thrilled to be there. An ancient succubus forces them to level up in dungeons beneath the Earth's crust, draining their power. With vampires, dragons, demons, and giant lava cats, this series is packed with adventure and is an excellent introduction to LitRPG.
