"Thunderbolts Trailer Debate: Taskmaster's Absence Sparks Controversy"

by Gabriel May 14,2025

A new teaser for Thunderbolts has ignited a lively debate among MCU fans regarding the fate of Taskmaster, following the noticeable absence of the character from a pivotal scene. Initially, the Thunderbolts trailer from September 2024 clearly depicted Taskmaster standing between Ghost and U.S. Agent in the Watchtower scene. However, the latest teaser for the film reveals the same scene with Taskmaster conspicuously missing.

Taskmaster in Thunderbolts Teaser

This omission, coupled with the recent announcement of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, which included Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman but excluded Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress), has led many to speculate that Taskmaster may not survive Thunderbolts. The absence of Kurylenko from the Avengers: Doomsday lineup suggests to fans that her character might meet a grim fate in Thunderbolts.

The change in the teaser has prompted numerous theories among fans. Some believe Marvel might be engaging in a double-bluff to mislead viewers, while others suggest the studio could be adjusting its narrative in relation to Avengers: Doomsday. Moreover, a detailed comparison of the frames from both the original trailer and the new teaser reveals slight differences in character positioning, fueling speculation that Sentry, known for his ability to 'delete' individuals, might have already eliminated Taskmaster at this point in the film. Alternatively, there's a possibility that Taskmaster could turn against the Thunderbolts.

On social platforms, fans are divided. Redditor Matapple13 commented, "Marvel pretty much just sealed the fate of this character in the movie. Yesterday they announced Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman in the Avengers: Doomsday cast, but Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress) was blatantly absent, and now, Marvel posts this..." Conversely, user puckallday offered a different perspective, stating, "The amount of people saying she’s dying and Marvel seemingly leaning into that by barely showing her make me think there's a reveal there with her in the movie and that she lives."

The teaser also highlights Sentry's immense power, with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) describing him as "stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one." This could imply that Taskmaster's disappearance is the result of Sentry's actions, potentially eliminating or sending her to another dimension.

As the MCU continues to unfold, recent developments have kept fans on the edge of their seats. The absence of Taskmaster from the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement has sparked discussions about whether it hints at the plot of Thunderbolts. Furthermore, Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have hinted at more cast reveals for Avengers: Doomsday, leaving room for speculation that Taskmaster might still have a role in future MCU projects.

With Thunderbolts slated for release in May 2025, followed by Ironheart in June and The Fantastic Four: First Steps kicking off Phase 6 in July, fans won't have to wait long to see how these events play out. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars following in May 2027.
