"Super Mario World" Sequel Title Briefly Appears in NBCUniversal Press Release

by Violet May 15,2025

It appears that we might have gotten a sneak peek at the title for the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie due to a premature announcement from an NBCUniversal press release. According to reports circulating online, NBCUniversal's press release for its Upfront Showcase inadvertently listed "Super Mario World" as one of the upcoming films from Universal Pictures and Illumination set to debut on their streaming service, Peacock.

However, the mention of "Super Mario World" was quickly scrubbed from the press release, indicating a possible mistake or premature reveal. Gaming journalist Wario64 highlighted this on Twitter, showing the before and after versions of the press release:

The original press release also mentioned "Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions," with Shrek and Minions confirmed to be referring to Shrek 5 and Minions 3, respectively. This suggests that "Super Mario World" might be an umbrella term or a placeholder rather than the final title for the Mario movie sequel. Just as the next Shrek movie won't be simply called "Shrek," and the next Minions movie won't be simply called "Minions," the actual title for the Mario sequel could be different.

Despite this, "Super Mario World" as a title has sparked speculation due to its specificity compared to a generic "Super Mario" or "Super Mario Bros." Given its connection to a beloved game, it could indeed be a fitting name for the next installment in the Mario movie franchise.
