Sony's recent policy changes regarding PC gaming have sparked significant debate among gamers. Previously, the company mandated tethering to the PlayStation Network (PSN) even for single-player games, a requirement that not only frustrated many players but also limited game sales in regions where PSN is not available. However, Sony has announced a shift in its approach, offering some relief to PC gamers.
In a move to address these concerns, Sony has decided to remove the mandatory PSN tethering for several high-profile titles on PC:
Despite this relaxation, Sony continues to encourage PSN account linkage by offering exclusive in-game rewards for those who choose to connect:
In response to investor inquiries in November, Sony's COO, Hiroki Totoki, acknowledged the opposition to PSN connection requirements. He emphasized the necessity of such measures to maintain security and order, particularly in service-based games. However, he did not clarify how single-player games benefit from this requirement, leaving many questions unanswered.
As gaming evolves, Sony's adjustments reflect an attempt to balance security concerns with player satisfaction and accessibility.
