Sony is reportedly developing a new handheld console to compete with Nintendo's Switch, marking a return to the portable gaming market. Bloomberg reported on November 25th that this new device aims to allow PlayStation 5 game play on the go. This move positions Sony to better compete with Nintendo, the dominant force in handheld gaming, and Microsoft, which is also exploring the handheld market.
This new console is expected to build upon the PlayStation Portal, released last year. While the Portal's reception was mixed, a device capable of native PS5 game play could significantly broaden Sony's appeal, particularly given recent PS5 price increases. Sony's previous handhelds, the PSP and PS Vita, enjoyed success but ultimately couldn't challenge Nintendo's dominance. This new venture suggests a renewed focus on the portable gaming sector.
The burgeoning mobile gaming market is a key driver behind this initiative. The convenience and accessibility of mobile gaming are undeniable, but smartphones have limitations, particularly when it comes to more demanding games. Handheld consoles offer a superior experience for these titles, a market currently dominated by Nintendo's Switch. With Nintendo's expected release of a Switch successor around 2025 and Microsoft's entry into the handheld market, Sony's move is a strategic response to secure a share of this growing sector. Sony has yet to officially confirm these reports.
