Sony Reboots Starship Troopers After Helldivers Movie Announcement

by Skylar Apr 10,2025

Sony is reportedly developing a new reboot of the Starship Troopers franchise, with acclaimed director Neill Blomkamp set to write and direct this fresh take on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 military sci-fi novel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety, this project is being spearheaded by Sony's Columbia Pictures and is intended as a direct adaptation of the novel, distinct from Paul Verhoeven's 1997 cult classic film which satirized the source material.

The announcement of Blomkamp's involvement comes at an interesting time, as Sony recently revealed plans for a live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation game Helldivers, which draws heavy inspiration from Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. Helldivers features soldiers fighting for a satirical fascist regime against alien bugs, echoing themes from Verhoeven's film. This raises the possibility of Sony having two competing projects with similar themes, though Blomkamp's Starship Troopers is said to be a more faithful adaptation of Heinlein's novel, which differs significantly in tone from Verhoeven's satirical take.

Currently, neither the new Starship Troopers nor the Helldivers movie has a confirmed release date, suggesting fans may have to wait a while to see these projects come to fruition. Blomkamp's most recent work was also with Sony, directing the adaptation of the PlayStation game Gran Turismo.
