Sony's proposed acquisition of Kadokawa has generated excitement among Kadokawa employees, despite potential concerns about reduced autonomy. This article explores the reasons behind their optimism and the analyst's perspective on the deal's benefits.
Sony's confirmed bid to acquire Kadokawa has sparked debate. While negotiations continue, analyst Takahiro Suzuki, as reported by Weekly Bunshun, suggests the deal primarily benefits Sony. Sony's shift towards entertainment necessitates strong IP development, an area where Kadokawa excels. Kadokawa's extensive IP portfolio, including popular anime like Oshi no Ko and Dungeon Meshi, and the critically acclaimed game Elden Ring, makes it an attractive target for Sony's expansion.
However, the acquisition could compromise Kadokawa's independence and lead to stricter management. As Automaton West notes, this could stifle creative freedom and result in increased scrutiny of projects not directly contributing to IP generation.
Despite potential drawbacks, many Kadokawa employees reportedly welcome the acquisition. Weekly Bunshun interviews reveal a positive atmosphere, with employees expressing a preference for Sony over the current leadership.
This positive outlook stems partly from dissatisfaction with the current Natsuno administration. A veteran employee cited the inadequate response to a major data breach earlier this year as a key factor. The June cyberattack by BlackSuit hackers resulted in the theft of over 1.5 terabytes of data, including sensitive employee information. The perceived lack of leadership during this crisis has fueled employee desire for change. Many believe a Sony acquisition could lead to a change in management, starting with the removal of President Takeshi Natsuno.
