Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is spearheading a cinematic adaptation of the acclaimed video game Sleeping Dogs. This isn't just a rumor; sources close to the project confirm that the film is actively in development, with Liu attached to star as Wei Shen and serve as a producer.
While an earlier adaptation attempt, featuring Donnie Yen, fell through, Liu's involvement marks a significant resurgence for the franchise. Liu's own enthusiasm, fueled by fan support, extends beyond the film; he's also aiming to help develop a Sleeping Dogs sequel game.

The original 2017 adaptation, starring Donnie Yen, ultimately failed to materialize. Yen himself confirmed its cancellation, citing the unpredictable nature of Hollywood development. This makes Liu's current endeavor even more noteworthy.
Liu's recent tweets, initially sparking confusion among fans, have since been clarified. He acknowledged the challenges of getting a video game adaptation greenlit, especially when executives lack familiarity with the source material. The overwhelming positive response from fans, however, has provided vital momentum.
The production company Story Kitchen, known for its work on adaptations like the Sonic the Hedgehog films and Netflix's Tomb Raider series, is leading the Sleeping Dogs movie project. Square Enix, the rights holder, remains involved. Story Kitchen also has other video game adaptations in the works, including Streets of Rage and It Takes Two. While a writer and director are attached, details regarding a release date and production start remain undisclosed.

This Sleeping Dogs film represents a significant comeback for the franchise, particularly given the cancellation of a planned sequel game in 2013 and the subsequent closure of United Front Games, the original developer, three years later. Over a decade after the original game's release, Sleeping Dogs is poised for a major resurgence.
