Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Says

by Alexander May 07,2025

Shawn Levy, renowned for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, is set to direct an upcoming Star Wars movie that has fans buzzing with anticipation. The film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, recently shared an encouraging update with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting that the project might be progressing faster than expected. "I am [excited] too," Tropper said. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Details about Levy's Star Wars film remain largely under wraps, but we do know it will be set after The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has positioned the film in the timeline, noting it will take place "post-[the first] nine, maybe five or six years out." This makes it the first Star Wars movie to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.

In an interview with Deadline, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this eagerly awaited project.

Given the timeline, fans can expect Levy's Star Wars movie to hit theaters no earlier than the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027. This comes after a period of uncertainty for the franchise, with Disney having released no Star Wars films since the 2019 release of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker. During this hiatus, several planned projects were cancelled, including films from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Furthermore, a Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen some changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars endeavors, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming films.

Moreover, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new Star Wars trilogy that will not continue the Skywalker Saga, contrary to initial reports.

For Star Wars fans eager for more content, the next installment to look forward to is Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
