Ryan Reynolds recently revealed on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated concept for a Star Wars project to Disney. While the actor didn’t disclose whether Disney accepted the idea or if it would manifest as a film or series, he shared intriguing insights into his vision.
Reynolds suggested that an R-rated Star Wars project wouldn’t necessarily focus on mainstream characters but could explore a broader range of personalities within the universe. He clarified that an R-rating wouldn’t necessarily equate to vulgarity but could serve as a vehicle for deeper emotional storytelling. “R-rated is a Trojan Horse for emotion,” he noted, expressing curiosity about why studios hesitate to embrace such risks.

Reynolds has proven his prowess in the R-rated genre, contributing significantly to three of the top five highest-grossing R-rated films ever: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. Last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine grossed over $1.3 billion globally, further cementing its status as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
While Reynolds acknowledged the potential appeal of an R-rated Star Wars project, he expressed hesitation about starring in it. “I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit,” he admitted. Instead, he indicated interest in producing or writing the project, emphasizing the importance of scarcity and surprise in maintaining the allure of beloved franchises like Star Wars.

In other Star Wars news, Shawn Levy, a frequent collaborator of Reynolds’, is reportedly working on Star Wars: Starfighter, a project with attached stars like Ryan Gosling. Meanwhile, Reynolds continues his Marvel journey, quietly advocating for a Deadpool and X-Men crossover film.
Whether Disney will greenlight Reynolds’ R-rated proposal remains uncertain, but his ideas underscore a fresh perspective on the Star Wars universe. Stay tuned for updates on Disney’s expanding Star Wars initiatives.
