Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have been raving about its stunning card art for months, but a recent discovery has added a new layer of excitement. It turns out that some of these cards contain hidden details that link directly to the classic Game Boy games, delighting fans with these subtle nods to Pokémon's rich history.
The excitement began over the weekend when Reddit user asch_win noticed that the Spearow card features landmarks that are unmistakably from the Pokémon world. Surrounded by grass, a fence, trees, and two distinctive buildings, the Normal/Flying type card subtly references Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen’s Celadon City Department Store. Just to the left of this iconic location lies Route 16, famous for its fenced-in grass patch where Spearow can be encountered. This connection has sparked a wave of interest and investigation into other cards.

It's clear that Creatures Inc. and DeNA, the developers behind Pokémon TCG Pocket, have intentionally crafted these cards to pay homage to the beloved games that catapulted Pokémon into a global phenomenon. But the fun doesn't stop with Spearow. Another Reddit user, jteede, discovered further connections to the early titles, such as a full-art Diglett card located east of Vermillion City and a Haunter card near the eerie Lavender Town tower. Asch_win also used a magnifying glass to uncover hidden details in the Supporter cards, revealing more nods to specific locations within the Pokémon universe.
While many card illustrations depict Pokémon in whimsical, dreamlike settings without direct ties to the lore, some cards, like a unique Pikachu variant, can be found in the real world. Others are exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket, where players are uncovering these cleverly hidden Easter Eggs.
The Pokémon TCG Pocket community has been buzzing with excitement, meticulously examining other cards for additional references. Notable discoveries include the S.S. Anne cruise liner subtly featured in a Gyarados full art card, and a trio of Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards that weave a narrative set near FireRed and LeafGreen’s seaside Snorlax.

Since its launch in October, Pokémon TCG Pocket has released one additional booster expansion set titled Mythical Island, bringing the total to four packs available for players. More sets are expected to be released in the future, with new cards also being introduced through Wonder Pick Events and other updates. As Creatures and DeNA continue to enrich the game with cards spanning various generations, fans should keep their eyes peeled for more hidden references.
In the meantime, you can explore the current Wonder Pick event, featuring Charmander and Squirtle, and delve into why the developers are being coy about whether pack choice matters.
