Pokémon Go Director on Scopely: No Need for Fan Concern

by Nathan Apr 11,2025

After the acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the company behind Monopoly Go, fans have expressed significant concerns about potential changes, including increased ads and data privacy issues. However, a recent interview with Michael Steranka, a product director at Pokémon Go, published on Polygon, aims to alleviate these worries.

In the interview, Steranka praised Scopely's approach and emphasized that both Niantic and Scopely share similar values. He confidently stated that Scopely would not introduce intrusive ads into Pokémon Go. Addressing privacy concerns, Steranka firmly assured fans that Niantic would never share or sell player data to third parties. He concluded by emphasizing that the transition to working under Scopely would have minimal impact on Niantic's operations.

ytIf it ain't broke...While there might be some corporate influence, I believe Scopely will not heavily intervene in Pokémon Go's operations. The game has been, and continues to be, highly successful. Moreover, Niantic's new spin-off team is focused on expanding AR technology, which suggests their main business direction moving forward.

Steranka also highlighted the close involvement of The Pokémon Company in decision-making processes related to Pokémon Go. This partnership implies that any actions not aligned with The Pokémon Company's standards would be unlikely to occur now or in the future.
