PlayStation Portal Gets Cloud Game Streaming Beta Updates, Including Gameplay Capture Support

by Grace May 29,2025

Sony is introducing a new update for PlayStation Portal users enrolled in its Cloud Streaming Beta. This update brings several enhancements to the remote play system's cloud capabilities, set to roll out later today.

A significant improvement is the introduction of sorting options for games within the Cloud Streaming Beta catalog. Users can now categorize titles by name, release date, or their recent addition to PlayStation Plus.

Another exciting addition is the ability to capture gameplay during a Cloud Streaming session. The traditional create menu options remain available, allowing users to bring up the menu, take screenshots, or record video clips. According to the PlayStation blog, video clips up to 1920x1080 resolution and lasting up to three minutes are supported.

PlayAdditionally, gameplay will automatically pause when accessing the PS Portal quick menu, entering rest mode via the power button, or encountering a system error message. However, the pause in rest mode is limited to 15 seconds; beyond this, the cloud streaming session will disconnect. This pause function isn’t supported in online multiplayer modes.

Further updates include a queue mechanism for instances when the streaming server reaches capacity, notifications for inactivity, and enhanced user feedback tools. PlayStation has stated its commitment to continuously adding new features based on user input.

Currently, the Cloud Streaming Beta is accessible exclusively to PlayStation Plus Premium members, enabling them to stream select PS5 games from the PS Plus Catalog via the PS Portal. Following an update last year, the Portal transformed into a more independent cloud streaming device, and it seems Sony intends to refine this feature progressively.

As cloud streaming solidifies its position in the contemporary gaming landscape, it will be intriguing to observe how Sony’s offering develops alongside its PlayStation Portal device. For now, users can enjoy features such as capturing dozens of screenshots while streaming to their Portal.
