Sony has shed some light on the recent PlayStation Network (PSN) outage that persisted for nearly a full day over the weekend. In a social media statement, the company attributed the disruption to an "operational issue" but refrained from elaborating on the specifics or outlining measures to prevent future occurrences.
To make amends, Sony is offering PlayStation Plus subscribers an additional five days of subscription time, which will be automatically credited to their accounts.
Throughout the outage, gamers faced significant disruptions. More than a third of users were unable to log in, and many others reported experiencing server crashes during gameplay.
The mandatory requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player games on PC, continues to be a point of contention among players, with this recent outage reinforcing their concerns about the policy.
This incident isn't the first time PSN has faced extended downtime. A notable example is the massive data breach in April 2011, which caused over 20 days of connectivity issues. While the current situation is less severe, PS5 users are expressing dissatisfaction with Sony's limited communication regarding the outage.
