Baldur’s Gate 3 player count surges as the game releases its final major update. Dive into the details of what Patch 8 brings to the table and what's next for fans of the acclaimed RPG.
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has rolled out its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its epic journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled Patch 8, the concluding major update for the game. The finality of this patch has sparked a significant increase in player numbers, propelling BG3 just outside Steam's top 10 most played games. Prior to the patch, the game hovered around 60,000 concurrent players, but it has now soared to over 169,000.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, highlighted the player surge on Twitter (X) on April 22, crediting the thriving mod support for giving the studio space to focus on their next project. Reports confirm that Larian Studios is moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to explore new ventures.
Consequently, D&D's stewards, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, will carry on the Baldur’s Gate legacy without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.
Patch 8, announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been a long time coming. This update enriches the game with 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other features. The detailed patch notes, available on BG3’s official website, showcase an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that the game concludes on a high note.
Larian Studios has poured considerable effort into refining BG3, evident in the comprehensive updates and fixes included in this final patch. Although this marks their last major update, Larian remains committed to supporting the modding community, ensuring that the game continues to evolve.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is accessible on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For the latest updates on the game, be sure to check out our detailed article below!
