The development of The Outer Worlds 2 is reportedly progressing smoothly, according to Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart. In addition to this exciting update, Urquhart also provided insights into the development of their upcoming fantasy RPG, Avowed, during a busy period at the studio.
In a recent interview with Limit Break Network on YouTube, Urquhart expressed his confidence in the team working on The Outer Worlds 2. "I'm impressed with the team," he stated. "We have a lot of people on that game that get it—who have worked on the first one and have been with us for a long time. So I've actually been really impressed by it." This assurance comes amidst the studio's focus on Avowed, another highly anticipated RPG, with Urquhart reassuring fans that The Outer Worlds 2 is "going really well."
Urquhart acknowledged the challenges faced by the studio, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and following their acquisition by Microsoft. The period saw the team stretched thin while working on multiple titles, including Grounded and Pentiment. "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half," he admitted candidly. There were even discussions about halting The Outer Worlds 2 to focus on Avowed, but Obsidian decided to stick with their original plan and continue development on all projects.

Reflecting on the hectic period, Urquhart recalled, "We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment." Despite the challenges, he noted that both Grounded and Pentiment "turned out awesome," and shared that Avowed is "looking great," while The Outer Worlds 2 is "looking incredible."

The Outer Worlds 2 was first announced in 2021, but updates have been scarce since then. Urquhart acknowledged the possibility of launch delays, similar to what happened with Avowed, which has been pushed back to 2025. However, he emphasized the studio's commitment to delivering high-quality games. "We will get there with all these games," he affirmed. "Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we're going to get there, and I think that's been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are expected to be available on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
