Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera boasts a resolution of just 480p, which is significantly lower than the 1080p offered by Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera. This was confirmed by the UK My Nintendo Store, providing clear details on the resolution capabilities of both cameras.

Despite its lower resolution, Hori's Piranha Plant camera, officially licensed by Nintendo, comes at a more affordable price compared to Nintendo's $49.99 camera. It's also versatile, allowing users to use either the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera. Both cameras are set to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera offers unique functionality; the part containing the webcam can detach from the pot, enabling placement directly on top of the Switch 2 for enhanced portability. Additionally, the plant's mouth can be closed to cover the lens, adding a playful touch to the device.

Nintendo fans expressed astonishment at the Piranha Plant camera's resolution. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" pondered redditor Ramen536Pie. "That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost humorously remarked, "That’s actually hilarious. Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Another user, pokemonfitness1420, questioned, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"

During the recent Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2's GameChat functionality, activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch and interact with each other during gameplay, enhanced by the use of a camera and a built-in microphone designed to perform well in various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is poised to be a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online initiative in years.
