"Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features Unveiled in Patent"

by Max May 14,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz with its innovative Joy-Con design, as hinted by recent patents filed by Nintendo. Although we're still awaiting official confirmation, these patents suggest that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will feature magnetic attachments and a unique mouse-like functionality, sparking excitement and speculation among fans.

According to the patent, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." This indicates that the Joy-Cons will attach magnetically to the Switch 2, enhancing ease of use and versatility.

The patent also details the detachment mechanism, stating, "The first button and the second button are provided in the longitudinal direction in the top surface of the protrusion. The first button and the second button are to be pressed by a user. The first button is attracted to the first magnet by a magnetic force. The second button is attracted to the second magnet by a magnetic force." This design ensures a secure yet user-friendly attachment system.

One of the most intriguing features is the Joy-Con's ability to function as a computer mouse. The patent includes illustrations showing players using the Joy-Con railside down, with the R1 and R2 buttons acting as left and right mouse buttons, respectively. There's also a potential scrolling function using the joysticks, offering a new way to interact with games and applications.

Further illustrations demonstrate the versatility of this mouse-like function, which can be used in various configurations, including a dual mouse setup or with one Joy-Con as a mouse and the other as a standard game controller.

The magnetic attachment feature was one of the earliest leaks about the Switch 2, while the mouse-like function emerged later and has yet to be officially confirmed. However, a teaser released earlier in January subtly hinted at this feature, showing the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface like a computer mouse.
