"Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances Original Games"

by Lucas May 01,2025

The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has finally arrived, and as previously reported, it's largely backwards compatible with Switch 1 games. However, Nintendo is taking things a step further by introducing specially enhanced versions of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. These enhancements go beyond just graphical and framerate improvements, offering a more immersive gaming experience.

Play**What Games are Playable on Switch 2?** ----------------------------------------

Nintendo has categorized the games playable on the Switch 2 into three types. First, there are native Switch 2 games designed exclusively for this new system and not playable on the original Switch. Second, there are compatible Switch 1 games that can be played natively on the Switch 2 by simply inserting their cartridges. Finally, there are Switch 2 Edition games, which are enhanced versions of Switch 1 titles that come with new features and performance boosts when played on the Switch 2.

It's worth noting that this categorization does not include the classic games accessible through Nintendo Switch Online, which offers a rich library from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now even GameCube.

So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct showcased that Nintendo is keen on providing additional value for players opting for Switch 2 Editions of Switch 1 games.

For instance, the Switch 2 Edition of Super Mario Party Jamboree introduces Jamboree TV, a new suite of content that leverages the Joy-Con 2's mouse controls, the Switch 2's built-in microphone, and the separately sold USB-C camera. Alongside these, players can expect upgraded resolution up to 1440p in TV mode, enhanced frame rates, new minigames, and improved online functionalities.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a cross-generational title, will support mouse controls with the Joy-Con 2 and offer multiple display modes. Quality Mode will run at 60fps in 4K when docked, or 1080p at 60fps in handheld mode, while Performance Mode will provide 120fps at 1080p when docked or 120fps at 720p in handheld mode. Both modes will support HDR, enhancing visual quality.

Other Switch 2 Edition titles like Kirby and the Forgotten Land will receive new story content with the Star-Crossed World add-on. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will incorporate additional support for the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App, offering guides and game help.

Some games, such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A, will focus primarily on performance and resolution enhancements as part of their Switch 2 Edition.

When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?

The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, and the first batch of Switch 2 Edition games will launch around the same time. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will debut their Switch 2 Editions on the console's launch day, June 5, 2025.

Subsequent releases include Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV on July 24, 2025, and the update for Kirby and the Forgotten Land on August 28, 2025. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A are slated for release sometime in 2025, though exact dates have not been announced yet.

Play**How Much Will Switch 2 Editions Cost?** -----------------------------------------

The cost of Switch 2 Editions varies based on ownership of the original Switch 1 version. If you don't own the Switch 1 version, you can purchase the Switch 2 Edition at retail, which will be identifiable by its distinctive red-colored physical game case. Digital versions will also feature a prominent Switch 2 logo for easy identification.

For those who already own the Switch 1 version and want the Switch 2 Edition's enhancements, an upgrade pack will be necessary. These packs will be available at select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop, though the exact cost has yet to be disclosed.

Some upgrade packs, such as those for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will be included in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. This membership not only grants access to these upgrades but also provides online features and a classic game library.
